Rainbow Lorikeet Mural – West Ryde

I had the privilege of painting the giant rainbow lorikeet mural on the side of 59A Ryedale Road, West Ryde, as part of the City of Ryde’s Graffiti Management Project. This large-scale artwork was a collaborative effort between City of Ryde, the building owner, Blackbook Ink, and the local community, ensuring the design truly reflected the area’s identity.

Concept & Design Process

After Blackbook Ink was awarded the tender, I visited the site with City of Ryde representatives and the building owner to discuss potential mural themes. To involve the community, the Council conducted a public consultation, gathering input on what they wanted to see on the wall.

Based on this feedback, I created three different nature-inspired concepts featuring local flora and fauna. The chosen design—a vibrant rainbow lorikeet set against a soft-focus (bokeh) background—was selected because it represents the lorikeets seen daily in Anzac Park, located just across the road.

Mural Creation & Execution

Transforming the large brick wall into a striking, nature-inspired artwork took two weeks of intensive work, from surface preparation to the final details. Once completed, the mural was sealed with an anti-graffiti coating to protect it from vandalism and ensure its longevity.

Community Impact

This mural is more than just a decorative piece—it was commissioned under the NSW Government’s Graffiti Management Project to beautify the city, foster community pride, and reduce graffiti. Since its completion, the artwork has transformed the space, creating a visually engaging landmark that resonates with residents and visitors alike.
