The Appreciation of Street art in the community
Over the recent years graffiti and street art has come along way to now being recognised as a true form of art since the increased popularity. More people are contracting graffiti and street artists to help create unique pieces of mural art in homes and businesses. The result of this ever growing trend just may surprise some people, its been suggested and also shown through many successful programs world wide the positive effect that the once taboo graffiti/street art can have for home and business owners.
A post graduate student Chanuki Seresinhe from the University of Warwick conducted the study interested to find out the effects of street art murals within a neighbourhood in a interview about her study Chanuki was quoted saying the following:
- “Researchers of urban policy maintain that the creative industries are key to building a successful city economy”
- “Governments around the world make significant investments in the arts in order to incentive gentrification and regeneration in specific neighbourhoods.”
- ‘’A comparison of the relative change of mean residential property price and the proportion of ‘art’ images suggests that the higher the proportion of ‘art’ images, the greater the relative gain in house price’’
Not only do street art and graffiti murals improve the general look of a space but the study suggests that it also has the ability to improve the area from a financial aspect which then goes on to benefit the community by creating more jobs within the area, which is especially beneficial for areas were employment opportunities are low.
Marrickville Council in Sydney NSW is a great example of taking this idea on board they created a program that has been a huge success since its creation in 2014. This program Perfect Match allows residents and business owners who are interested in having murals painted on there walls to team them up with an artist to create a unique mural. This project has created not only some great urban art work but also brought people from all over to come and check out the street art which is by self-guided tours, bicycle tours, photography tours and a number of satellite events which showcase the heritage, culture and artists creating the artworks and also creating revenue for the area.
